Three Things That Make Barton Creek Pool Chemistry Harder Than Its Water
Most of Barton Creek, Lost Creek, and Seven Oaks fills from Austin Water, and a few subdivisions west of Loop 360 get the same Colorado River water through a small local district. It is moderately hard, 70 to 126 ppm total hardness, gentle by Central Texas standards. Easy water, except that the pool sits inside a system: an infinity edge sheeting into a basin, a raised spa, a sheer descent, a gas heater. Moving water evaporates faster than still water, and evaporation is how calcium concentrates, so an edge pool reaches 300 to 500 ppm sooner than a plain one.
So we manage this water for where it is going, not where it started. Calcium hardness gets tracked visit by visit, and we recommend a partial drain in the cooler months before it crosses 500 ppm, never in August on plaster. pH is held at 7.4 to 7.6 because heater exchangers scale fast when it drifts, and the saturation index is calculated weekly so the glass tile stays glass. Fertilizer drift and clippings carry phosphate into the pool, phosphate feeds algae, and a fairway pool that keeps fighting green often has a phosphate problem under the chlorine problem.
The lots do the rest. Canyon sites off Southwest Parkway and Barton Creek Boulevard sit under heavy live oak and Ashe juniper, so cedar pollen coats the water from December into February and oak catkins follow in March and April. Deer wander through at dusk. Steep drives put the equipment pad well below or above the water, which means long plumbing runs, priming trouble on startup, and a pump pushing water uphill all day. Add automation (IntelliCenter, OmniLogic, iAquaLink) running schedules nobody has reviewed since the builder left, and the weekly visit is as much inspection as cleaning.
