What Comes Out of a Driftwood Hose Bib Decides the Whole Program
No water utility averages things out in Driftwood. Most lots pump from private Trinity Aquifer wells, and that water comes up very hard, often 15 to 25 grains, with total dissolved solids above 500 ppm and sometimes iron, manganese or sulfur you can smell at the hose. Some homes fill from a rainwater tank instead, and that water arrives with next to no calcium or alkalinity, so it hunts minerals out of your plaster. Plenty of houses also run whole-house softeners, and softened water trades calcium for sodium: fine for the dishwasher, wrong for a pool. Fill from the bypass.
So the first visit on any Driftwood pool starts at the hose bib: hardness, alkalinity, metals, a sniff for sulfur. On well fill we manage the saturation index from week one, because calcium starts near the top of the 200 to 400 ppm range before evaporation adds to it, and we dose sequestrant when metals show up. On rainwater fill we do the reverse and put calcium and alkalinity in on purpose. And because every gallon comes from your well, partial drains happen only when the numbers demand it, in cool weather, and a weeping pad gets fixed fast.
The lot does the rest. Driftwood pools are custom gunite on one to five acres, freeform shapes with rock features and spas, under heavy live oak and Ashe juniper. Cedar pollen coats the surface December into February, live oak catkins follow in March and April, and caliche dust off county roads rides in on every breeze. Deer treat the pool as a water trough. Waterfalls and spillovers aerate the water, pushing pH up and inviting scale onto the rock they pour over. Add 100°F afternoons, water in the mid-80s, and chlorine demand that roughly doubles, and weekly stops being optional.
